Auto Insurance Basics :

The basics to saving money on auto insurance involve a series of simple steps. First, you’ll want to have your automobile declarations page (Dec page) in front of you. The dec page lays out all of your auto coverages and what you pay for each of these coverages.

Each state in the US has different laws regarding what type of auto insurance you’re required to have. For example, Michigan auto insurance policies require personal injury protection (PIP) coverage. Some other states do not. So you’ll want to make sure you ask at least three different insurance agents in your state what the “required” auto coverages are for your state.

Here are the most common automobile coverages:

Uninsured motorists’ coverage. Uninsured motorists coverage insures you for damage someone else does to you.

Property protection coverage. This covers you if your car damages someone else’s property. Usually it is their car, but it could be a fence, a house or any other property damaged in an accident.

It also provides you with legal defense if another party files a lawsuit against you. It is a good idea to purchase enough of this insurance to cover the amount of damage your car might do to another vehicle or object.

Comprehensive coverage. Covers your vehicle, and other vehicles you may be driving for losses resulting from incidents other than collision. For instance, it will cover you for your windshield, or if your car is stolen, or if your vehicle is damaged by flood, fire, or animals.

Collision coverage. This covers damage to your car when you get into an accident. This coverage will kick in when your car hits or gets hit by another vehicle or other object.

Road service & towing. Provides emergency roadside service and towing.

No fault PIP coverage. These coverages and limits will vary by state; but it generally covers medical, work loss, and funeral expenses of the insured; others in his vehicles and pedestrians struck by him.

Bodily injury liability coverage. Covers other people’s injuries or death caused by you. It will also cover your legal defense should the injured party file a lawsuit against you.

You’ll definitely be saving money on auto insurance if you check what the insurance will cost you while you’re car shopping. Some cars are more expensive to repair or replace than others.

Also, insurance companies will charge higher premiums on certain types of cars such as sports cars and convertibles because they consider these to be higher risk.
